Self-knowledge is not only discovered in solitude. It is also distorted, constrained, and sometimes even produced through relationships, class, culture, trauma, and the roles we learn to inhabit, so the inward gaze is not always as transparent as the essay suggests.

and yet, can we ever truly make this gaze perfectly objective? is it not ourselves, the subject, who is omnipresent in the equation?

Brook it's amazing article. these are approximately things I wrote in my diary. I badly relate.

This feels deeply true.

Knowing yourself rarely begins

with one big revelation.

It begins in quieter places—

in what hurts more than it should,

in what keeps returning,

in what makes you feel most alive,

and in the patterns that ask

to be noticed rather than judged.

Sometimes self-knowledge is not a sudden answer,

but a gentler relationship

with your own mind.

A way of paying attention

that slowly turns confusion

into familiarity,

and familiarity

into peace.

I'm afraid of being alone with my own thoughts. so much so that if I'm not working, I'll pick up a book or scroll online or listen to podcasts or watch YouTube instead of doing anything in silence with my thoughts. Each time I've tried to overcome it I end up crying, because my thoughts overwhelm me. It's not even that deep lol but still.
